What is GST in Canada?
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a federal tax applied to most goods and services purchased in Canada. Unlike the HST, which combines both federal and provincial sales taxes, the GST is a federal tax set at a flat rate of 5% across the country.
No matter which province or territory you’re in, the GST rate remains consistent, although some provinces may also apply additional provincial sales taxes (PST). You can check the full chart here for province-wise taxes in Canada.
Which Provinces and Territories Use GST?
Here is a full table of GST rates by province and territory in Canada. Since the GST is a federal tax, it remains at a constant 5% across all provinces and territories, but I’ve included additional tax information where applicable for clarity.
| Province/Territory | Tax Type | Rate (%) | Federal GST (%) | Provincial Share (%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alberta | GST | 5% | 5% | N/A |
| British Columbia | GST + PST | 12% | 5% | 7% PST |
| Manitoba | GST + PST | 12% | 5% | 7% PST |
| Northwest Territories | GST | 5% | 5% | N/A |
| Nunavut | GST | 5% | 5% | N/A |
| Quebec | GST + QST | 14.98% | 5% | 9.975% QST |
| Saskatchewan | GST + PST | 11% | 5% | 6% PST |
| Yukon | GST | 5% | 5% | N/A |
GST Calculation formula
The formula for Calculating the Total Price with GST
The formula to calculate the Total Price including GST is:
Total Price = Pre-tax Price × ( 1 + GST Rate)
Where:
GST Rate is the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate (e.g., 5%).
Pre-tax Price is the price before GST is applied.
Example Calculation
Let’s assume you’re purchasing an item with a Pre-tax Price of $100 in a province where the HST rate is 15%:
Total Price = 100 × (1 + 0.05)
This simplifies to:
Total Price = 100 × 1.05
Total Price = 105
Thus, the Total Price including GST is $105.
