What is HST in Canada?
The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) is a combination of the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the provincial sales tax. It simplifies things by merging the two taxes into one rate, applied to most goods and services in participating provinces.
Instead of having separate GST and provincial sales taxes, the HST allows for easier tax calculations and streamlined payments. The HST is only applicable in certain provinces, which we’ll break down below. Please check this guide to learn more about applicable taxes in Canada.
Which Provinces Use HST?
Currently, only a few provinces in Canada use HST. The rest apply either only GST or separate GST and Provincial Sales Tax (PST). Here’s a list of provinces where HST is applicable, along with the corresponding tax rates:
| Province/Territory | Tax Type | Rate (%) | Federal GST (%) | Provincial Share (%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New Brunswick | HST | 15% | 5% | 10% HST |
| Newfoundland & Labrador | HST | 15% | 5% | 10% HST |
| Nova Scotia (1st April 2025) | HST | 14% | 5% | 9% HST |
| Ontario | HST | 13% | 5% | 8% HST |
| Prince Edward Island | HST | 15% | 5% | 10% HST |
In these provinces, you don’t need to calculate GST and PST separately—just the HST. It’s a single tax rate applied to most purchases.
HST Calculation formula
The formula for Calculating the Total Price with HST
The formula to calculate the Total Price including HST is:
Total Price = Pre-tax Price × ( 1 + HST Rate)
Where:
HST Rate is the Harmonized Sales Tax rate, which varies by province (e.g., 15%).
Pre-tax Price is the price before HST is applied.
Example Calculation
Let’s assume you’re purchasing an item with a Pre-tax Price of $100 in a province where the HST rate is 15%:
Total Price=100×(1+0.15)
This simplifies to:
Total Price=100×1.15=115
Thus, the Total Price including HST is $115.
